Precision ultra-wideband measurement devices for industrial environments

Overview
The TMPSYS-Series 7000 IP range of sensors are precision ultra-wideband (UWB) measurement devices, containing an array of antennas and ultra-wideband radio receivers. The sensors detects UWB pulses from the tags, allowing the location system to find the tag’s positions to within 15cm* in 3D.

Flexible and scalable installations
The system uses a cellular architecture to scale from small to very large installations – large areas are covered by tiling them with ‘cells’ consisting of a small number of sensors working together. Thousands of sensors can be integrated into a single enterprise wide system to monitor an unlimited area and manage thousands of tags. Sensors can be connected together in a variety of ways, allowing infrastructure cost to be traded off against location accuracy in accordance with application requirements.

Standard networking - wired or wireless
Sensors operate within a Ethernet environment, using standard network infrastructure, such as Ethernet switches, Wi-Fi access points and Cat5e structured network cabling for communication between sensors and servers. Sensors can be powered over the network cabling using Power-over-Ethernet switches.

Accuracy
By using UWB technology, the system’s location accuracy is maintained even in cluttered, multipath-rich indoor environments. The UWB location system is the only one capable of measuring both Angle-of-Arrival (AoA) and Time-Difference-of-Arrival (TDoA) of tag signals, enabling it to generate accurate 3D tracking information even when only two sensors can detect the tag. This reduces the infrastructure requirements for an installation, minimizing costs whilst dramatically improving the reliability and robustness of the system.

Real-time responsiveness
Each sensor is capable of sustaining a continuous update rate of up to 134Hz, meaning a tag location can be provided every 7.5ms from each sensor or cell.

Two-way communications
TMPSYS-Series 7000 IP sensors also support two-way control and telemetry communications with tags over a conventional bi-directional 2.4GHz radio. The sensor’s two-way communication capability allows the system to dynamically manage the update rate of tags in the system, send feedback to users via tag’s LEDs, query tag battery status information and button press actions, and wirelessly reprogram tags to enable new features.

Ease of maintenance
Sensors are administered remotely over the Ethernet network. Firmware is downloaded into the sensors over the network allowing them to be easily upgraded when new features become available.

IP rated sensor variants
There are three variants of the IP rated TMPSYS-Series 7000 sensor -IP30, IP54 and IP65. These have been designed for a variety of both indoor or outdoor scenarios and engineered to operate in both normal and extremely harsh industrial environments.
Below is a summary of the different environmental installation scenarios suited to each IP rated sensor:
The IP30 rated sensor is intended for normal indoor operation where a standard level of protection against water and dust is required.
The IP54 rated sensor can be used for normal indoor or outdoor operation. It has a backing plate on the rear of the sensor and has two self-adhesive brushes which are housed at the base of sensor to prevent water and dust from entering the sensor housing via the cable entry points.
The IP65 rated sensor has been designed for extreme outdoor operation in harsh industrial environments requiring protection not only against water and dust but also high winds, heat and cold. The sensor includes a backing plate with cable glands at the base of the sensor for extra protection against extreme elements.
